Jackie Wu: On the Front Lines of Democracy

Tuesday, September 10, at 2 PM on KPFK, my guest is Jackie Wu, who worked for the Orange County Registrar of Voters. She's written a firsthand account titled On the Front Lines of Democracy: An Election Official’s Story of Protecting the Vote in 2020. It's an insider’s account of administering, defending, and advocating for one of the nation’s best voting systems. Not exactly what you might expect from a show that features novels, poetry and cultural criticism but I think you'll be surprised and delighted, and apprehend my purpose in sharing Jackie Wu's insights and experiences toward seeing our way forward to the November election.  Wu worked as the Community Outreach Manager for the Orange County Registrar of Voters where she oversaw the translation of election materials offered in 9 languages, election worker training, pop-up voting, social media, media, legislation, and outreach to approximately 2 million voters in the fifth largest voting jurisdiction in the United States. And all this during the dual challenges of COVID and election disrupters, fake news purveyor, fake vote centers, and fake ballot drop boxes. There’s also a deeply moving American origin story here and a compelling personal account by a person whose everyday work involved bravery, commitment, and integrity. Register to Vote. Learn about our elections system. Defend it.
